Week of February 3, 2014

SCIENCE:
This week we’ll be working on our renewable and nonrenewable resource research paper.  THIS PAPER IS DUE ON FRIDAY! the only in-class work days for this assignment will be Monday and Tuesday.  Wednesday and Thursday we’ll brush up on kinetic and potential energy again and prepare for our VOCABULARY QUIZ on FRIDAY!

MATH:
This week we continue to prepare for the upcoming Unit Test (which will take place on FRIDAY.  We will go back and hit on slope, y-intercept, and writing equations again and give a few more activities with functions and linearity a shot.  The Study Guide should be ready for you by Wednesday.

Week of January 27th

Picture Science:  This week we’ll be introducing our unit on ENERGY!  We’ll begin by looking at Potential vs. Kinetic energy. We’ll do our vocabulary flipbooks for the unit, complete a graphic organizer, and have some fun with QR Codes.  Later in the week we’ll bring back some of those QR Codes but switch over to a pitching wedge… we’ll actually be looking into the different types of energy.  Friday will be a vocab quiz and current event article.

Math:  This week we are wrapping up writing equations given points, graphs, and tables.  We will introduce functions vs. non-functions and linear vs. non-linear in the equation (LOL!) as well.  Its gonna be math-errific!

Science:
This week in science we will be wrapping up our force and motion unit.  We will do a couple of activities where we look for simple machines in our everyday lives and then we’ll analyze how they complete work more efficiently.  Thursday we will complete out study guides and FRIDAY WILL BE THE UNIT TEST!!!! ARGHHHHH!

Math:
In math we will continue to investigate linear functions.  Our week will include writing equations given graphs, 2 points, a slope and 1 point, and tables. Be on the lookout for our CRCT REVIEW HOMEWORK #1.

Week of Jan 13th

Science: This week is all about Science Fair!  Science Fair is Thursday night and we’ll be working all the way up until the event.  Student’s that still need to complete their Science Fair project will have time in class to do so.  Students who are finished will be working on a webquest on Newton’s 3 laws of motion.  Friday, students will get their new vocabulary words and have an opportunity to explore simple machines through interactive tech modules.

Math:  In math we are continuing work on slope, y-intercept, and equations.  We will complete our investigation of these concepts when given a graph and move on to exploring slope and y-intercept when given two points or a table of values.  Quiz coming up early next week!

Week of January 8, 2014

Science:

This week in Science we will be spending each day working on our Science Fair work.  Students must complete their logbook and their tri-fold display. SCIENCE FAIR PROJECTS ARE DUE ON MONDAY!!! Don’t wait until the last second to finish your display. The Science Fair will be next Thursday.  You should be at the Jefferson Civic Center at 5:30 for Open Walkthroughs at 5:45 with the award ceremony to follow at 7. Be There!

Math:

In math this week, we will begin investigating linear functions.  Our focus this week will be on writing the equation for a line on a graph including identifying its slope and y-intercept.  You will have homework on Wednesday and Thursday and a short quiz on Friday.  YAY!!!!

Week of 12/16

Science:
Monday we will be giving out and beginning work on the Study Guide for our Final Exam.  Both Tuesday and Wednesday students will be working on GA College 411 but will have an opportunity to return to their Study Guide once they finish.
THE SCIENCE FINAL IS ON THURSDAY!!!!  STUDY!!!!!

Friday we will begin previewing the next unit we will be doing after the break.

Math:
Monday and Tuesday we will be working on the Study Guide for the final Exam.
THE MATH FINAL IS ON WEDNESDAY!!!!
STUDY!!!!!
Thursday and Friday we will begin previewing the next unit we will be doing after the break.

Week of December 9th

Science:
This week we will be continuing our study of force and motion.  We will be creating a vocabulary flipbook (Test on vocab on FRIDAY!) of the Force and Motion unit.  We will also discuss the difference between balanced and unbalanced forces.  We will introduce Newton’s Laws of Motion and complete a Rollercoaster mini-project demonstrating each law.  Finally, we will complete our Walking Dead Zombie Lab comparing acceleration and velocity (which has been weather delayed for over a week now – – Think SUN!!!!).

Math:
In Math, we will be completing our Holiday Ornament project in preparation for Math Curriculum Night on Tuesday, December 10th.  Students will be completing a writing prompt regarding their ornament and also presenting it to the class.  We will spend Wednesday prepping for our Unit Test.  Thursday is the DAY OF THE UNIT TEST!!!! (Pythagorean Theorem and Volume of Cones, Cylinders, and Spheres).  Friday we will complete the UNIT TEST PERFORMANCE TASKS!!!!

Week of December 2nd, 2013

Science:
This week we’ll be spending a couple of days getting our Science Fair notebooks set up.  The first lab notebook check will be this Friday.  There will be 2 other notebook checks before the final project is due January 7th.  We will be introducing our force and motion unit on Wednesday and then Thursday and Friday we’ll be doing a Walking Dead lab to explore velocity, acceleration, and speed.

Math:
This week in Math we’ll be finishing up our studies of the Pythagorean Theorem by looking at finding distances between points on the coordinate plane.  Your student should have a small amount of homework on this topic each night.  We will also be learning about how to find volumes of cones, cylinders, and spheres later in the week.  We will quiz on this material on Friday.

DON’T FORGET: MATH CURRICULUM NIGHT TUESDAY DECEMBER 10th

Week of 11/4/13

Science:

This week we will be studying the law of conservation of mass in terms of chemical reactions. Students will have a variety of vocabulary activities, will learn to ensure similar masses in chemical equations, and will begin balancing equations.  On Friday, students will work on a web quest in the computer lab.  Students should begin prepping for their UNIT TEST which will be NEXT WEEK!!!

Math:
Students will begin studying the Pythagorean Theorem this week.  We will be looking at real world and mathematical examples of applying the theorem and will be looking into the background of Pythagoras as well.  There will be a writing assignment on the topic given out on Friday.

Week of 10/7/13

Science:
This week in science we will be continuing our research for the Science Fair on Monday (please don’t forget your Science Fair proposals are due on Thursday!), we’ll introduce atoms on Tuesday, complete an element/compound/mixture lab on Wednesday, and take a quiz on Thursday. Friday we’ll be sleeping in and celebrating in general merriment.

Math:
In math we’ll be beginning our intensive study of expressions and equations by evaluating and simplifying expressions with variables.  If we’re lucky, we might even get to complete some CMP investigations for practice!  Huzzah! In all likelihood, we will also have a quiz on Thursday… so you’ve got that going for you, which is nice. Gunga galunga.
