Week of March 3 – 7

Good morning!  We are focusing on figurative language and poetic devices this week in Language Arts.  Both sets of classes will be completing a figurative language and poetry scavenger hunt.   The regular education classes will focus on finding and analyzing the examples of figurative language.  The gifted / advanced class will have to find and analyze examples as well create original examples of figurative language and stanzas of poetry. On Wednesday, we will work on comparing poetry to fiction and nonfiction texts.  Thursday will be a review day.  On Friday, we will take a quiz!  Students will receive a CRCT review sheet on Tuesday.  Their homework will be to complete each day’s assignment for discussion during our warm-up.

Good afternoon!  We are shifting the work from last week to the current week.  Our focus will be on  sentence structures, using context clues within texts, direct  objects, indirect objects, transitive verbs, and intransitive verbs this week.  Students in the regular classes as well as the advanced class will have a quiz on Friday!

This week we are focusing on analyzing expository text structures, reviewing sentence structures, and analyzing nonfiction articles.  On Friday, all Language Arts classes will have a quiz on expository text structures, sentence structures, and misplaced / dangling modifiers.  Students will have homework each night focusing on expository text structures and grammar review for CRCT.  Each class has a warm-up focused on reviewing specific skills.  Please continue to encourage your student to read for at least thirty minutes every evening!

Good morning!  We have a very busy week!  On Tuesday, all students are expected to turn in brainstorming, rough draft, and final drafts for their expository essays assigned last week.  We will be reviewing for the Mock Writing test.  We are administering the Mock Writing Test on Wednesday.  During class on Wednesday, we will be visiting the Media Center for new books!  On Thursday and Friday, students will have writing and reading workshop.  Students will focus on developing an entry for the Young Georgia Author’s Writing Competition.  During Reading Workshop, students will focus on reading a new novel for their third nine weeks book talk.  Have a wonderful week!

Good morning!  We have lots ahead this week.  The focus of the week will be on reading informational texts and writing expository essays.  Students will have an expository essay due next Tuesday, January 21st.  We will be doing mini lessons in class to review writing tips.  Students will be reading informational texts this week to support their writing.  Students will be expected to complete the worksheet about Hunger Games Vocabulary to prepare for a quiz on Friday.

In my Advanced ELA class, we will also focus on reading informational texts and writing expository essays.  Students will be able to select their own expository writing topic as well as the reading to support their topic.  Students will have an expository essay due next Tuesday, January 21st.  We will be doing mini lessons in class to review writing tips.  For homework, students will be analyzing past exemplar writing essays.  Students will have a short quiz on Friday in which they will be using context clues to determine the meaning of vocabulary words in context.

Week of December 9th

Good morning!  This week in our Regular Language Arts classes, students will be completing Daily Reading Practice independently for a summative grade.  Also, any student that earned below a 70 on last week’s DGP quiz, will have to complete remediation on the sentence and re-take the quiz this Friday.  We will be working diligently to finish The Hunger Games this week.  Students will have an interactive notebook check this Thursday.  I will be making sure that students are working to complete the Facebook Status Updates for each chapter as well as the character charts for HG.

In Advanced Language  Arts, students will be completing Daily Reading Practice independently for a summative grade.  Also, any student that earned below a 70 on last week’s DGP quiz, will have to complete remediation on the sentence and re-take the quiz this Friday. We will continue working with “The Gift of the Magi” this week.  We will be focusing on plot, figurative language, and theme.
