Note to parents: I have met with each student on their current language arts grade on Friday and Monday. Please speak to your child about their grade. If their grade is below 70, please encourage them to attend the lunch and learn session on Tuesday to work on deficit skills and complete test corrections to improve their grades. 6 week report cards will be coming home next week.

We are off to a great start! I have enjoyed getting to know all of you and look forward to a great year. We have now had two graded assignments in language arts and you should be able to start checking Infinite Campus to see how you/your child is progressing. I have “Lunch and Learn” sessions on Thursdays for students who need additional support or remediation of skills. My policy for “redoing” an assignment is that if student received a low score on an assessment, they must participate in the “Lunch and Learn” session in order to re-test. This week we will be working on reading comprehension strategies as we continue to read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Chapters 5 and 6. We will be learning how to interact with the text by developing thought-provoking questions. We will also be completing a performance task in class over the setting and characters in the book. We did not have a quiz on chapter 4, but we will have a quiz on chapter 5 on Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on how far we get with our reading. It will be a basic comprehension quiz, assessing how well the students are understanding the story.
Monday-Review “quiz” on chapters 1-3 of Roll of Thunder (no need to study-this is for me to use to determine student’s understanding of material thus far). Connotation vocabulary activity.
Tuesday-Figurative language practice with Roll of Thunder. Read chapter 4.
Wednesday-Symbolism practice with Roll of Thunder. Finish reading chapter 4.
Thursday-Introduction of a reading comprehension strategy, discussion facilitator.
This week we will be continuing our novel study of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Our goal is to read chapter 3 and begin chapter 4 by the end of the week. If you would like to have your child preview or review the chapters at home, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org, and I will check a book out to your student. They will need to bring the book to and from school since our copies of books are limited. We are working on standards related to figurative language, symbolism, and comprehension strategies. Please let me know if you have any questions.
I am so excited that we started our first class novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, this week. This book contains some mature themes such as Jim Crow Laws in the South during the 1930s and racial relations. It would be great if parents could get a copy of the book for themselves, so they can read along and have good discussion with their student. 🙂 This book also connects to 8th grade social studies standards. Our first quiz will be this Friday over Chapter 1. Students will be asked to answer 4-5 comprehension questions over the chapter, so there is really no study guide. Students may check out a book to bring home to review the chapter 1 material prior to the quiz if they would like.
I sincerely hope everyone enjoyed their summer vacation and were able to make memories with their loved ones.
